Empathy is a foundation for effective leadership in Agile. It creates trust and psychological safety, which allows your team to think courageously and build better products.
LEADERSHIP AND VISION
It’s interesting to think about what the term management means in a more collaborative development process. Process in AGILE is adaptive. Strategy, planning and implementation is about teams aligned to achieve product goals. In my eyes, leadership is key. Developing a high-performing culture is not about leading with a singular exclusive vision but mentoring and empowering individuals to be creative, productive and inclusive. At the organizational level Agile will support and align great teams that will have a unified goal and share in the vision of the products we deliver. A football team is a grouping of special teams. If any part of the team doesn’t perform the team doesn’t win. Agile and Scrum frameworks will support inclusionary thinking and make everyone more responsive to change and growth.
Agile is a principle not a management process. It’s a mindset that thrives in organizations that work collaboratively by placing value on the individual, team and end user. It’s a change not only in how we do things but in how we make great products and build teams!
PRODUCT THINKING
For fifteen plus years I have been product focused delivering creative solutions to clients and stakeholders never losing sight of important relationships that impact the products we deliver. As a leader in my organizations, I have had to breakdown complex client problems and present impactful solution designs. In a product development framework, the solution must be allowed to grow and change ensuring we maximize the value to the customer and end user. In Scrum, the entire development team is accountable for delivering a usable high value increment for the product. Leadership is letting the team manage themselves and trusting them to make good decisions. This is a tenant of scrum and without a framework of scrum values the process will fail. Of course, review and retrospective processes allow for alignment and adjustment.
